2. Content is King!

Let me state the painful news and get it out of the way first: for banner ads on your site, More does NOT equal BETTER!

It's tough to believe so I'll repeat: the MORE banner ads you put on a page, the LESS likely it is that any one of them is going to bring you lots of dollars.

Keep in mind that when search engines are reviewing ("spidering") your site, they are looking for searchable CONTENT. The more relevant content you have, the higher your site ranks in their engine (each one does a different amount of Search Engine Math on how "relevant" your page is, so we won't get into individual search engine preferences here…

Do some serious reading on the correct way to do Search Engine Optimization (you'll often see it written about as "SEO.") Your first task is to make sure that you're not CHEATING with the way your page is designed, that you don't have obnoxious errors in your keywords and metatags (like repeating SEX, SEX, MORE SEX, SEXY SEXXX, ORAL SEX……) which could get your pages rejected by a search engine. Next, make sure that you have PLENTY of text on your page that talks about what your page is about. Here are some basics to make sure you have:

1. Title tag - don't have a page called "untitled" anywhere in your site
2. Paragraph-sized description on your homepage telling me what your site is about, as close to the top of the page as you can get! (CHEATING would be doing this in 4 point type, at the bottom, in the same color as the background to make it "invisible" and not mess up your pretty page design. Try that and the Search Engines send you to the penalty box!)
3. Alt-tags on all your pictures with relevant text about your site ("Picture of me working my first day at adameve.com" etc.)
4. Include text-based navigation through your site (search engines can't read a graphic that says "click here" but they CAN read text!)

That will help get your site noticed more with the search engines. Then, on your page, be stingy with the amount of page space you give to ads and consoles. Don't give the websurfer SO many options to click on, that they give up in confusion and click on NONE! (We've tested this proposition for many years and found that the more options we throw at a customer, the more likely they are to do NOTHING! Our motto here is K.I.S.S.!)

Make sure that you have MORE banners/graphics/ads in your arsenal than will fit on a page. Then you can run a banner for a few days/weeks (depending on how much traffic is hitting your page) and if Banner A doesn't work, then try B. (or look for automated scripts/add-ons to rotate between A and B with each page load!)

Same for sponsors. (If you have an Exclusive agreement with a sponsor, ignore this one) Always have more sponsors in your in-box than you have space on your site: if Company A isn't exciting your customers, then give Company B a shot! Maybe it's just that Company A is on the wrong page - shift them around. Swapping sponsors' locations on your page keeps the design looking more fresh than leaving the pages untouched. Fresh pages are more likely to grab a websurfer's attention.

The moral here is: Test, Test, and TEST! Talk to your sponsors, look at ALL their marketing options, learn if they can do special links or offers for your page to maximize your sales for your specific site. If you have a niche site, chances are you need to show niche offers.

Look for sponsor deals that are a good mesh with the content on your site and that match the interests of the people hitting your pages (How much cat food would you sell on a Puppy site?) Great payout rates only work for you if your traffic clicks through and buys! When looking for new income from your site, look at your target market and match the offers to the websurfers.
